UCAA's conference date is September 27-29th, 2007. This year's line up is Dr. Hyveth Williams, Alvin Slaughter and Dr. James Doggette, Cedric Dent of Take Six. Registration and other information will be published on March 1, 2007. Just giving my Blacksda family a heads up. It's at Miracle Temple again this year.

2007 UCAA Music Reference Packet Song Submission Process

Let's face it - As songwriters, many times our songs don?t get exposure outside of our own church congregations. And as music ministers, we often face scrutiny when requesting church support for conference participation! This year, UCAA wants to address both through the 2007 UCAA Music Reference Packet! Imagine contributing your songs as part of a new and valuable resource of worship music that UCAA conference attendees can purchase from songwriters to introduce to their congregations!

UCAA is soliciting music from songwriters that we can combine into a music reference packet for our conference attendees. These songs should be congregational responses and songs for worship service, considering the following worship functions:
Introit, Welcome,Offertory,Prayer Invitation, Prayer Response,Praise and Worship, Song of Preparation (before Minister speaks), Solo Selection, Communion,Benediction.

UCAA will select and assemble a panel of writers and musicians who will review the submissions. Submit as many songs as you want! UCAA may select up to 25, and will pay the composer $25 for each song selected. The composer must sign a release to allow UCAA to copy up to 100 copies of the music for inclusion in the music reference packet. Each score will be labeled ?COPYRIGHT PROTECTED ? REFERENCE COPY ONLY? to discourage copying. Each composer will retain their copyright for the song. Each composer must provide proof of copyright with documentation for each song submitted. Each composer must sign a waiver stating song is an original and they are the original composer.

The composers will be recognized at the keynote session featuring speaker and worship leader, Minister Alvin Slaughter.

The 2007 UCAA Music Reference Packet

The Music Reference Packet will be a valuable resource of new congregational music for all music ministers! Each packet will include: each score, a composer bio and contact information, song overview and worship function recommendation, ?how to purchase? info and price list, and an overview of copyright laws regarding copying of music for the songwriter?s protection.

General Criteria

Style Diversity - We serve thousands of worship communities each with a diverse worship culture and style cannot be THE evaluative deciding factor. Can your song be adapted ? does it have the strength lyrically to be modified to fit a multitude of congregational settings?
Worship Function - The song needs to serve a function in the worship service, i.e.: offertory, prayer response, communion, praise and worship, etc.
Lyrical Poetry & Accessibility - Does your song allow worshipers to offer their praise and worship in a new and unique (but not too unique) way. This is what C.S. Lewis called, Lyrical Poetry. Songs also need to be accessible, each church?s definition of what is accessible will differ but generally if you can sing the song after only hearing one verse and one chorus it is accessible.
Theological Content - Above all else this criterion is most important. Make sure the lyrical content is doctrinally sound. What truth is it speaking to the congregation?

3. You may also submit a CD or mp3 of the recorded selection (does not have to be a professional recording ? can be a copy of a recorded service) along with the score ? but not in lieu of the score.

Songs will be reviewed in advance according to the criteria listed above. The top 20-25 songs chosen to be included in the 2007 UCAA Music Reference Packet will be announced in July.

All entries submitted must be original songs and shall not infringe any copyrights or any other rights of any third parties. Songs may have multiple co-writers, but only the individual submitting the song will receive the selection honorarium. Entrant shall, by entering, indemnify and hold UCAA harmless from and against any claims inconsistent with the foregoing. UCAA is open to all amateur and professional songwriters and anyone regardless of nationality or origin. Employees of UCAA, its immediate families, subsidiaries and affiliates are not eligible. If entrant is under 18 years old, the signature of a parent or guardian is required. Entrant agrees should his/her song(s) be selected as a winner, UCAA shall have the right to include the winning song(s) in the 2007 UCAA Reference Music Packet (if song is selected) to be used for fundraising purposes only. Entrant retains all ownership rights to the submitted song(s).

Songwriters will also be able to sell their scores individually at the conference. UCAA will have assigned personnel for the UCAA Music Table, who will sell the 2007 UCAA Music Reference Packets, along with individual scores. The composer will establish the sales price for each individual score, and UCAA will receive ¢.25 per score sold. To receive an application please email UCAA at info@ucaaonline.org .
