Here is a story on Alyssa Moore competing in the Chicago Marathon. I thought some might like to see it.
http://www.dailyamericannews.com/articles/...news/news02.txt QUOTE Local female athlete competes in grueling Chicago Marathon By Bob Ellis, Staff Writer Tuesday, October 9, 2007 12:41 PM CDT Redbird runners fear not when the heat is on, literally, even when other athletes are wilting around them. The brutal heat shut down the Chicago Marathon Sunday, but several determined runners managed to stay the course and finish the race. Among them was Alyssa Moore, daughter of former City Council member Doug Moore. Debilitating weather plagued this year's 30th annual run, and, as the Associated Press reported, forced organizers to shut down the race in which a participating police officer died and dozens of other runners were hospitalized, including two who remained in critical condition. Moore, 28, a 1998 FCHS graduate who ran Cross Country here, told The Daily American Tuesday morning that the conditions were terrible, but she managed to finish the 26.2-mile run, as did many others. With a few miles to go the police were trying to shut the race down, but runners "ran around them" determined to reach their goal. It was Moore's first marathon, a stern test of stamina, personal will and determination. She had been training since April, running five times a week working the distance up to 21 miles. One factor developed in the 90-degree heat when water stations ran out. "People along the route were spraying hoses on the runners," Moore said. But still they fell and the conditions became alarming, forcing officials to want to end it. "I thought I could do it. I just didn't expect it to be so hot," Moore said. In true Redbird spirit, she said she would probably run another such race in he future. As to the physical challenge, she was better qualified to judge medial conditions than most of her fellow competitors, since she is a physician assistant at the burn center at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. According to A.P., Chad Schieber, 35, a Midland, Mich., police officer, collapsed while running on the city's South Side on Sunday. He was pronounced dead shortly before 1 p.m. at a Veteran's Affairs hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. "It sounds like he lost his pulse very fast and died on the race course," George Chiampas, the race's medical director, said at a news conference after the race. Chiampas said witnesses reported seeing Schieber collapse and become unresponsive. Race director Carey Pinkowski said organizers closed the race on concerns that emergency medical personnel wouldn't be able to keep up with heat-related injuries as the weather turned more cruel. At least 49 people were taken to hospitals, while another 250 were treated onsite, many for heat-related ailments. About 10,000 of the 45,000 registered runners never even showed up for the race, while another 10,934 started but didn't finish, officials said. Within two hours of the 8 a.m. start time, temperatures already had reached a race-record of 88 degrees. The previous marathon record of 84 degrees was set in 1979. The high heat index prompted organizers to stop the race at 11:30 a.m., about 3 1/2 hours into the run. Runners who hadn't reached the halfway point were diverted to the start and finish area, while those on the second half of the course were advised to drop out, walk or board cooling buses, Platt said. He and other organizers acknowledged that not all runners heeded the warnings, and many continued. Helicopters hovered over the race course while police officers shouted through a bullhorn and warned runners to slow down and walk. In the women's race, Ethiopian Berhane Adere rallied with a come-from-behind final sprint to defend her title. -------------------- Duane Clem

Good for Alyssa!!
I followed the URL and saw a picture of Alyssa there. She sure looks like her mother -- at least the last picture I saw of her. |

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR LINDA! GOD BLESS AND GUIDE AND KEEP! HE WILL MAKE ALL THINGS PLAIN IN HIS TIME, TO ALL OF US. YOU ARE MUCH LOVED. (I have never met Linda, and she does not know me. I have come to "know" her only from seeing and hearing her on 3ABN, noting some of the subsequent developments, and following the discussions on BSDA. But, my heart just wants so much to say, God bless you Linda.) This post has been edited by Brick Step: Oct 14 2007, 10:16 PM |

Today Alyssa will take her mother out for Linda's birthday, and they will celebrate the great event together. So let's join them in singing Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday dear Linda. . . Today is again a new beginning for you, Linda. Celebrate your freedom and strength in the Lord. I am so glad you are with those who love and cherish you. Happy Birthday! -------------------- The greatest want of the world is the want of men-- men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall. {Ed 57.3}
But such a character is not the result of accident; it is not due to special favors or endowments of Providence. A noble character is the result of self-discipline, of the subjection of the lower to the higher nature--the surrender of self for the service of love to God and man. {Ed 57.4} |

I have forwarded your birthday greetings to Linda, since she does not check BSDA herself. -------------------- "Any fact that needs to be disclosed should be put out now or as quickly as possible, because otherwise the bleeding will not end."
