There is no law requiring that a contract go to the lowest bidder. Arms length is a different matter.

It is a simple transaction. 3ABN bought a book to be distributed at cost to its viewers and supporters. It just happens that the author who receives the royalties he is legally entitled to is also the President of 3ABN. The book does not have to be of good quality as long as 3ABN needs it there will be publication runs and royalty payments.

Well, half a $mill, pretty good gig for a begging televangelist. As was stated we don’t know if 3abn is Remnant Publications only client, or what percent of the royalty fees when to Danny. But it does raise the question, just how much in royalty fees where paid to Danny for the 10ctr book? It is the fiduciary responsibility of the board to ask this question now that this information in question has become public. I am sure Danny is legally entitled to the royalty, but that is not the question. Non-profits have to be particularly conscience of their image and that of its leaders. After all, 3abn promoted the book as a give-away, no cost, just pay for shipping. If Danny received the payments, those payments came directly from its contributors, who I would not think they where putting $.5M in Danny’s pocket.

I always thought the quote about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing is about not doing good things in public just to be seen of men. Things that would make you look good and that you could feel self righteous about. Not being sneaky about things that you don't want others to know because they might make you look bad.

I agree with Calvin. The board should know what the business between Danny and Remnant was when he was president. They also should learn the details of what went on between 3ABN and D&L/DLS Publishing. What have they got to hide if everything was on the up and up?

I believe the distribution of the book, Ten Commandments Twice Removed, was mentioned in several places in the Illinois Conference Newsletter in May, 2006, by Kenneth Denslow. Since Mr. Denslow sits on the board of 3ABN, I'm sure he knows exactly where all the money went, and if he doesn't, maybe he should know. I agree with Observer that there is nothing illegal about paying royalties, but if people are being encouraged to make contributions that go to pay for these projects, then -- in my opinion -- the contributors should have a full accounting as to how the contributions were ultimately distributed.

The newsletter has recently been erased from the church's web site where I had gotten it, so here is the whole thing in its entirety --at least as far as I know it's the whole thing-- for context purposes. The emphasis in red is my addition:

SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH
Kenneth A. Denslow, President Wednesday, May 24, 2006
<<...>>

Constituency Meeting
On April 30, hundreds of delegates came from churches all over the Illinois Conference for our Quadrennial Constituency Session to enact business on behalf of the entire membership.

The meeting began with a rousing sermon from our Lake Union president, Elder Walter Wright.

At that meeting elections were conducted, reports were given, and the major initiative for the next five years was voted. Thank you to all those who gave their time for this meeting. It was a good day.

A special Conference Newsletter reporting on all the actions taken at the Constituency Meeting will be arriving in the homes of all Illinois Conference members in the near future.

Touch Every One for Jesus
Touch Every One for Jesus is the major focus for the next five years as voted by the delegates to the April 30 Constituency Meeting.

In this initiative, every zip code in the state of Illinois has been assigned to a church. The
churches are being challenged to prepare plans to make personal contact with every person in their territory during the next five years.

We are driven by words of Christ: “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”

A DVD will be arriving at your church soon and this video presentation will give more details about Touch Every One for Jesus.

Speaking of Touching lives, here are some evangelism reports:

§ Erick Voelz was baptized at the Champaign Church on May 6.

§ The King family and Taryn Averitt were baptized at the Marion Church on April 8.

§ Recently, a man called Pastor Dale Barnhurst and told him he wanted to study the Bible. It turns out that this man had been directed to Amazing Facts by his friend, Bobby Davis, and had studied through three sets of Bible study guides. Now he is studying with Pastor Barnhurst. This past Sabbath he attended church for the first time. Interestingly, he returned the next day to the church for a work bee. Pastor Dale told me that he has never seen anyone so hungry to study God’s Word.

Nancy Gable reports from the Savanna Church that their CHIP program last February and March was a great success with seven graduates. The group continues to meet as an alumni group.

10 Commandments Day
Many of our churches participated in outreach activities associated with 10 Commandments Day.

Pastor Titus Naftanaila of the Addison Romanian Church reports: “Last Sabbath many members from our church distributed over 4,500 books in Addison and we want to spread 4,000 more.”

Two churches of other denominations in southern Illinois have ordered copies of Ten Commandments Twice Removed for all of their members after the pastors read the book. One of them announced to his church the Sunday after he read the book that they would not be meeting on Sunday after that but on the seventh day. Five million copies of the book have been passed out in the past couple of months, over 100,000 here in Illinois.

Princeton Project
On May 1, after months of planning, volunteers began building the new Princeton Church. This past Sabbath the congregation and many of the volunteers met together to worship for the first time in the new sanctuary.

There is still work to be done, but the members are very happy to be in their new facility. They also very much appreciate the support that they have received from their brothers and sisters throughout the conference and union.

Here is what Pastor Jose Bourget wrote after spending a couple of days on the project:

“It was hard work, but the spirit of everyone there was like a mission trip. The members are so appreciative. Our presence and testimony in helping will show our parishioners that we can and should support one another. A small contribution can go a long way to bring a big state and diverse community of believers together.”

While the construction was going on Pastor Michael Weakley and Bible Instructor Katrina Lubinski conducted an evangelistic series in the Metro Center in Princeton. Already several have responded to the call for baptism.

Students from schools around the state got into the act as well. The entire town was blanketed with free copies of the book, Ten Commandments Twice Removed.

The members are now committed to carry on the work that they have begun. This committed congregation has embraced the goal of Touching Everyone in their territory for Jesus.

Bearing One Another’s Burdens
· Lorraine Coleman, wife of Pastor Leeroy Coleman, recently lost her mother after she had a stroke.
· The father of Pastor John Lomacang recently passed away in New York City.
· Annette Christian, a member of the Thompsonville Church, is suffering with cancer.
· Cleo Wightman, a former member in the Illinois Conference, passed away a few weeks ago in Berrien Springs, Michigan. She is survived by her husband, Roy, and their children.

Camp Akita Work Bee
Youth director, Jeff Deming (PJ) sends the following report:
“While we were limited in numbers, God made up with the incredible support of some of the pathfinder clubs who had just spent the weekend here at Camp Akita for the Illinois Conference Spring Camporee. The Pathfinders and the volunteers who came were able to pick up many fallen branches and twigs, as well as place boards on our new docks. We will have horseshoe docks here at Camp Akita and they placed boards on our newest addition to our waterfront – our Tower for the “Blob” you will want to visit and see this exciting new feature. Also we scraped and painted the Propane Tanks by the lodge, washed windows and did general clean up. Thank you to everyone who was able to help out and the blessing all of us at Camp Akita received. Also, thank you to Michael Boryca (Camp Ranger) and his entire staff for helping to set things and get things ready for a very wonderful work bee day. “

Mattoon Church Building Addition
I stopped by the Mattoon Church on Sunday and saw the new addition at their church. They have built a new entry and foyer that tie together the church building and the school. In the process they have dramatically changed the feel of the overall facility. They are to be commended for the hard work.

While we were there they could not help but share some of their outreach activities right now. They are energized by the idea of Touching Every One for Jesus in their territory.

Pathfinder Camporee
Here is a brief report from Jeff Deming, Illinois Conference Youth Director:
“May 5-7, we had our Illinois Conference Spring Camporee at Camp Akita. Going along with the emphasis that the 10 Commandments Day May 07, 2006, we decided that our theme for the weekend was “Covenant of Love.” Pastor Ken Veal was our speaker and did a wonderful job portraying and reminding us of God’s covenant of love that He has with each of us.

“In the worship service on Sabbath Pastor Ken had an appeal for those who wanted to dedicate their lives in specific ministry (pastors, teachers, Bible workers, and Evangelists) and 32 young people and a few adults came forward. The entire tent also stood as a sign that they wanted to also have a lifetime covenant with God. It was wonderful weekend for fellowship with over 400 in attendance.”

Adventist Leaders Meet US President at White House
Religious liberty and humanitarian concerns were the highlights of anApril 4 meeting between leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Churchand President George W. Bush.

At the invitation of the president, the 45-minute Oval Office sessionincluded Pastors Jan Paulsen, Adventist church world president; Matthew Bediako, secretary of the world church; Don Schneider, who is both president of the Adventist Church in North America and a vice president of the world church; and with James D. Standish, director of legislative affairs for the Adventist Church.

President Bush was particularly interested in religious libertyissues. Paulsen, who also informed Bush of his recent visit toRussia, said Bush "disclosed how passionately he feels aboutreligious liberty; freedom of conscience, freedom to worship, freedomto think, and against that background asked us some questions about how we found it to be in some countries of the world which do not have a good track record."

In greeting his visitors, President Bush mentioned that as governorof Texas he knew a Seventh-day Adventist church member on his staffwho had explained some of the church's beliefs, and that he was also familiar with Southwestern Adventist University in Keene,Texas. The meeting ended with prayer, Paulsen noted.

Just last week, Danny Shelton, president of Three Angels Broadcasting Network, also had an opportunity to meet President Bush at the National Day of Prayer. Danny and Wintley Phipps visited briefly with Bush and shared with him the book 10 Commandments Twice Removed.

Bike-a-thons
Over 150 people showed up for the Southern Illinois Bike-a-thon with about seventy of them riding the trail. The Marion Church served a big picnic meal in the afternoon. The Noble Church had a church campout in conjunction with the ride. There is talk of having it be a southern Illinois campout next year and bring in a guest speaker.

The attendance was down for the Northern Illinois Bike-a-thon probably due to many competing events at several northern churches. But those who came had a fine time riding in beautiful weather. Our fit and very health conscious Conference Executive Secretary, Kyoshin Ahn, rode more than 50 miles. I was gratified to hear him report the next day that his body was sore.

Upcoming Graduations
Broadview Academy’s graduation is this coming weekend, May 26-28
Hinsdale Adventist Academy’s graduation is on the weekend of June 2-4

Donna Willey to Serve on Ministerial Advisory
Each quinquinium the North American Division Ministerial Department appoints a Pastoral Advisory, composed of leading pastors, evangelists and church planters. This advisory meets to give input to the Ministerial Department on how they can better serve the pastors in this Division.

We were notified recently that Donna Willey has been chosen by the NAD to serve on this advisory as a representative for lay pastors. Donna along with her husband, Dr. Rod Willey, pastors the Richland Bridge in Rome, Illinois, a church that they planted. We congratulate Donna on this affirmation of her ministry.

North Aurora Teacher Honored
Robin Tucker, teacher at the North Aurora School, recently received the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award in a special ceremony. The Award included a $1000 grant for her classroom. The local newspaper ran a nearly half page article that not only extolled her quality but also that of the North Aurora School. Congratulations, Robin!

An International Women’s Conference is planned for June 15 – 17 at the 3ABN Worship Center in West Frankfort, Illinois. Extreme Grace is the theme for this event sponsored by Transforming Lives for Christ. To register online visit www.womenofspiritualpraise.com or call 800-681-6361.

SkyAngel Update
Many have been asking us about the future of 3ABN on SkyAngel. I got a report on that the other day. They are still working with SkyAngel in an effort to be reinstated. The problem is rather complicated but they are hoping to know one way or the other very soon.

In the meantime, you may want to consider purchasing the satellite dish from either 3ABN or the Hope Channel. Each of these allows you to get programming from the other in English and Spanish as well as from Loma Linda Broadcasting Network.

Passion Play at Broadview Academy
On Easter weekend, the students and staff of Broadview Academy put on a Passion Play for the community. Here is a student’s report of the program.

“Never had I seen the story of the crucifixion portrayed so vividly, and I’d never imagined a play about it could have had such a powerful impact on those there to witness it. Following the play, all around the campus I heard comments like, “that was the best Sabbath I’ve ever had” and “it really brought the story to life”. It was truly an inspiring experience, and I know lives were changed because of God’s awesome power.”

Yes, but would he have gotten the same deal with the royalties? Darius and Greg are right, there is nothing illegal about it., It is just that 3ABN on one side is buisness and on the other ministry. This situation has ethical issues because the ministry side, where Danny is co founder,/President is asking for money from it's contributors in order to distribute this book as a witnessing tool, only asking those interested for the cost of shipping. While Danny is on the buinsess side pocketing Lord knows how much money in royalties because he is also the author of said book. A good thing might have been for Dannyt ob e upfront with all of this, maybe even "donating" a good sized portion of the royalties to the effort. Looks bad, aprticularly at this time, for it to come out that he was geting royalties ont he back end of the deal, while proclaiming the fact that they distributed these books for free.

QUOTE(Pickle @ Oct 23 2007, 11:19 AM) *
It isn't that simple. Reports are that Danny could have gotten the book done elsewhere for around half the cost.

And one has to wonder why Remnant published the book instead of DLS Publishing. Why did he switch publishers?

didn't we review the book in question at one time and found it to be ummm shallow and specious at best? That a conference president would encourage that the book would be distributed is unbelievable... craziness....

Fortunately or unfortunately our opinions as to whether these transactions are legal do not count. By law, the IRS can slap intermediate sanctions on disqualified persons (Danny is a disqualified person according to the rules of the IRS) who use the nonprofits they are officers of to make money by doing just what he did. It is not that the government would put him in jail, but they could and probably would fine him heavily and any others involved.

I have a question. If Danny Shelton is a disqualified person, is DLS Publishing, Inc., also a disqualified person? I don't know the answer to this one. Just asking.

http://www.runquist.com/article_intermedsancts.htm This article describes disqualified persons. It is a long article and I don't want to post it all here because I don't think anyone wants to read the whole thing.

I didn't believe that DLS would be a disqualified person but on rereading the article, I think I was wrong and that DLS could indeed be considered to be a disqualllified person also. Tell me what you think the article says.
