Yesterday, April 18, Elder Doug Batchelor, of Amazing Facts, addressed the Board of the Sacramento Central SDA Church in regard to some changes in his duties. As I write this, Elder Batchelor is in flight to the HQ of 3-ABN, where in a special TV program, these changes will be announced. Then tomorrow, Elder Batchelor will fly back to Sacramento to preach Sabbath.

These changes have been approved by the President of the General Conference, the President of the NAD, ASI, and the Executive Board of 3-ABN.

Danny Shelton is resigning from his position as President of 3-ABN. I do not know, at this point what continued role Danny Shelton will have in the administration of 3-ABN. He is expected to announce today, that he wants to have more free time to devote to however he wants to spend his time.

Elder Doug Batchelor will become President of 3-ABN.

The two ministries are expected to continue but under the united leadership of Elder Batchelor.

Addition to my post:

I just got off of the telephone from talking to Molly at 3-ABN.

She confirms the basic story that I have posted.

In regard to my question as to whether or not Danny Shelton will step down as President, she tells me that Danny has informed the Board that he wants to step down. As she understands it, a final decision has not been made as to whether or not Danny would step down.

Without revealing my source, I suspect that Danny Shelton and Dough Batchelor have reached an agreement on this, which Molly may not be aware of, and that my announcement that he was resigning as President is correct.

Doug Batchelor has (wisely) tried to keep the "scandal" involving the Sheltons at a distance from himself... so why would he now jump with both feet into a situation where he would be working with Danny? Doug cannot afford to risk his rather large ministry. This makes me think that Danny will be moving to other pastures.

Edit for those who read here from the "other forum", who say I'm "falsely reporting": Reread what I said. I said, he's kept the SCANDAL involving the Sheltons at a distance from himself. NOT 3abn. He has continued his professional relationship with 3abn, unchanged, as far as I can tell. With all the accusations flying around, I still don't see him jeapordizing his ministry with Danny's involvement regardless of guilt or innocence. We shall see! Tonight will be enlightening.

It will be interesting to watch what direction 3abn takes after tonight.

Yesterday, April 18, Elder Doug Bachelor, of Amazing Facts, addressed the Board of the Sacramento Central SDA Church in regard to some changes in his duties. The greatest want of the world is the want of men-- men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall. {Ed 57.3}
But such a character is not the result of accident; it is not due to special favors or endowments of Providence. A noble character is the result of self-discipline, of the subjection of the lower to the higher nature--the surrender of self for the service of love to God and man. {Ed 57.4}

Fran:

Thank you for pointing out what was an error in my post. I did not want to say "united" leadership. I meant to say "unified" to indicate that Elder Batchelor would lead both organizations.

If there is no public acknowledgement of the problems that have been noted in the 3abn area... then this is not solution... it is just one more coverup... and nothing will have been accomplished. If this is a real change, it will not be glossed over, and past cruelties and errors ignored with no attempt at either change of personell who have been involved, or in reparations and public apologies to those who have been wronged... as well as hiring policies and salaries adjusted to suitable levels... and reparations paid for past injustices.

I'm not from Missouri... nor am I a "doubting Thomas"... but until I see real changes accomplished... reparations made, and guarantees for the future... I will just "wait and see".

This is only speculation but I suspect this will lead to an overhaul in the leadership and management of 3ABN…..and not just Doug as the front person with Danny pulling the strings in the background. 3ABN is a ministry but it is also a business. When a business has this many problems, typically a top leadership and management change is necessary in order for the new leader to be effective. These changes won’t take place overnight but you can expect new management as the old are eased out the door.

I agree with you.

I cannot immagine Elder Batchelor entering into the new relationship without some sort of agreement that changes would be made.

But, these may not happen overnight.

In one sense this story is developing. As it develops, there may be changes. We will simply have to watch and see exactly how it develops.

Well, I have ancestors who are from Missouri and a grown son who lives there so someone will need to "Show Me" how things are going to be made right before I will feel that positive steps are being taken.

Now is when the reality comes out: are the problems many have actually with the current leadership of 3abn, or with 3abn itself.

If the church at large (since it sounds like the GC Pres, NAD Pres, etc have given their approval) has decided to rescue 3abn, is the new management required to make apologies? Or can't they say: a new day has dawned, we're replacing so-and-so, and so-and-so, etc. (over time, of course. It is not usually wise to replace too many employees at once).

From my position, where I hold the current leadership responsible for their behavior (that being DS, certain management, and certain board members), the apologies need to come from those individuals whether or not they still are employed by 3abn.

While the new management can make a few statements of apology and moves of reconciliation where needed, if they get too involved in what the past management did, it could conceivably have bad repercussions for the new management.

From a Public Relations perspective (my background), any statements made by the new administration need to be very, very careful. They will want to start with a clean slate, not jump into a ugly mess.

Well, this could be a step in the right direction.

But for those of us on the sidelines who were becoming more and more, shall we say, uncomfortable with what we were seeing, it was always that Danny should step down from leading 3ABN to allow a free and impartial investigation into the allegations against him and the other leaders. (Particularly Tommy, but also if there was complicity in any cover-ups by Walt, John L, Mollie, Shelley, etc.)

So the first part of the request may be coming true, but if the scandals are not addressed, it makes the church look much worse than before because it could be just one more cover-up.
